MLIS Candidate

Kate Coburn

Hello!

This is my final semester in Old Dominion University's MLIS graduate program. I currently work part-time at my local library in Kilmarnock, where I pretty much wear all of the hats; that is, I work at least a little bit in almost every department, from technology to cataloging. That said, I feel like there is more to librarianship than I currently know, and I am eager to learn as much as I can!

This ePortfolio will serve as a comprehensive look at my work during my studies. I hope you enjoy!

About Me:

Kate (she/her or they/them) is 29 (going on 30) years old living in rural Virginia, in a region known as the Northern Neck. She lives at home with her parents, and works part-time at her local library--the Lancaster Community Library. At the library she works largely on cataloging new incoming materials, mostly printed books and physical DVDs or Blu-rays™; additionally, Kate runs two bi-weekly programs sponsored by the library, them being a creative writing group and a Dungeons & Dragons club. She is especially interested in the archives and cataloging aspects of library science, and she is happy to have gotten the opportunity to learn about both over the course of her MLIS studies.

Kate received their bachelor's degree in arts and sciences in English with a concentration in creative writing from the University of Mary Washington (where their mother also studied). They graduated from UMW in the Summer of 2020. They have a dream of becoming a published author of fantasy, but they also write comedy and realism as well. They are currently working (on and off) on a short story series inspired by the Forgotten Realms.
